More than just reading the eye chart.

A comprehensive vision exam checks your eyesight and your eye health — all in one visit. Your doctor will evaluate how well you see, update your glasses or contact lens prescription if needed, and look inside your eyes for early signs of conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetes — sometimes before you notice any symptoms.

What to expect

Your exam takes about 30–45 minutes. Your doctor will:

  • Check your vision and fine-tune your prescription
  • Test your eye pressure and peripheral vision
  • Examine the front and back of your eyes, including your retina and optic nerve
  • Review your overall health history — because your eyes don’t exist in a vacuum. Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and some medications can directly affect your vision.

We may dilate your eyes as part of the exam, so bring sunglasses just in case. And please bring your current glasses and contact lenses with you.

Optional wellness screening

We also offer an advanced wellness screening that gives your doctor a more detailed look at your optic nerve and macula. This is an additional charge and not covered by insurance — ask us about it when you schedule.

How often should you come in?

We recommend a comprehensive exam every one to two years, though your doctor may suggest a different schedule depending on your age, health, and risk factors. If it’s been a while, that’s okay — we’re not here to judge. We’re here to help.

Insurance and paying for your exam

Comprehensive vision exams are typically covered by vision insurance (like VSP), not medical insurance. This is one of the most common questions we get, so here’s the simple version: if your visit is for a routine checkup and updated prescription, that’s vision insurance. If your doctor is diagnosing or treating a specific eye condition — like dry eye, glaucoma, or diabetes — that’s medical insurance. Sometimes a visit involves both, and our team will help you understand what’s covered.

We accept most major vision plans. Don’t have vision insurance, or have a plan we don’t take? Worried about out-of-pocket costs for your exam, new glasses or contacts? You’ve got options:

  • Enroll in an individual VSP plan — you can sign up on your own, even without an employer plan.
  • CareCredit financing — flexible payment plans so cost doesn’t get in the way of taking care of your eyes.
